Hi all,
sorry I had some trouble with the previous message - don't care anyway.
I have three questions concerning X:

  1. Does any of u guys know if thre is an implementation of GKS
based on X Windows. If yes, where can I obtain it?

  2. The same for PHIGS.

  3. Has anyone tried to implement X11 Release 4 on an Apollo
	 workstation running DOMAIN/IX system 9.7 ?
If not, how did u get along with X11 Release 3 on DOMAIN/IX
	 9.7?

Thanks very much

A partial answer. There are two GKS implementations I know of.
The first is part of the contrib source under xgks and can
be had from the X11R4 tapes or via ftp from any of the distribution
machines. It does GKS level 2b (this right??) and puts up a
separate window for GKS. You cannot use it as is in an integrated
fashion with a larger X application unless it's OK to have a
totally separate display window. It contains no drivers for
other output devices and no Metafile that I noticed.

The second is GKSUL which is at least a 2b implementation. It is
not free, but is inexpensive at $1000 for a site license. It includes
drivers for a variety of devices including X and can be handed a window
ID to use, so it can be integrated with an X application. It is
maintained by University of Lowell. You can contact gks@ulowell.edu or
call the ULowell comp sci department. GKSUL supports both the C and
Fortran bindings, includes Metafile support and has a PostScript driver.

I'll let the X people talk about PEX.

I've used two GKS X packages. The first is the xgks on the MIT distribution
(donated by IBM) which is level 2c. It has a few bugs in the Fortran
interface library and its colormap handling has been significantly improved
by ucar (ncar?). It is not bug free, of course, but it does adhere quite
well to the 2c standard (in some cases too well). The other package I
use is the commercial Grafpak-GKS from ATC corporation. This supports
X output as well as other devices and can work within a widget hierarchy.
It is quite fast and capable, I've run into only one real bug so far.
The Uniras product also has an optional gks library and will plot to
X windows. They, as I understand it, are currently widgetizing their
X support. I haven't used the gks part, but the underlying graphics
package works quite well.
