I need information on tuning compress and/or unbatch. My system spends hours unpacking my daily news fix. Some details: H/W: 10MHz 68000 system on VMEbus 1 Meg ram 2 60 Meg Fujitsu 5.25" Winchesters S/W: OS = UniPlus+ V (basically Sys V) News version = "B 2.10.3 alpha 4/15/85" My news feed (prls) is a VAX-11/780 with 4 Megs of ram running under 4.2BSD using news B 2.10.2 (I think). My history file shows news items being unpacked at the astounding rate of roughly one per minute, net.sources items may take several minutes. What can I do to increase this? The history file on my news feed shows that it processes 15 to 20 items per minute. Does the compression done by the VAX have an effect on my uncompression? Will more memory help? Automatically? Must I modify any parameters for the news software? How do I identify which ones? I need some help to get this system going again. I just added another meg of ram to see if that would help, and, so far it hasn't. If anything, the system is running slower now with respect to unbatching/decompressing. But it's the middle of the night and my accounting system is running (accounting for all the time the system spends unbatching/decompressing). Please send help via mail or the net or whatever. If I receive multiple mail responses, I will, as the tradition goes, summarize to the net. Thanks in advance.
