[comp.windows.x] digital maps

gjw@ANDREAS.WR.USGS.GOV (Gregory J. Woodhouse) (11/17/90)

We do have them available. I need to go over to building 3 today, so I'll
look over what they have. I don't believe anything is available in xwd or
other X appropriate format, so some translation would have to be done. The
maps are available on tape as ASCII data files. I'll try to post more
information when I receive it.

I've been getting lots of mail regarding digital maps, so I thought I'd post a
reply to the list. First of all, we (the USGS) does sell digitalized maps,
but not in X readable format. It seems that one format is simply an array of
elevations, others contain line elements and distinguish natural features.
They are available on 9-track tape. I believe the numbebr for the mapping
center is (415) 329-3409.

There is also a firm here in Menlo Park called ETAK (I think, it's been a
long time since I was a summer hire student working for the Army) that
works on the GPS (Global Positioning System). You might contact them
regarding more traditional maps (especially urban maps where the USGS
really has nothing).

Sorry I don't have more for you right now. It's real buusy today, and I
haven't had the chance to go through their (our?) literature.
