[comp.windows.x] "Sign-up" to get Tom Roell's new server via U.S. Mail

shite@unf7.UUCP (Stephen Hite) (12/02/90)

Hi all,

For those of you who do not have FTP capability, I will be offering
Tom Roell's new x11r4 386/ix complete binaries distribution (roughly
8 meg in compressed form) after the 14 of December (after my grad finals)
via U.S. Mail. This is a FREE service and you will only be required to
supply the disks and SASE for the return trip home.

I welcome requests outside of the U.S. as well. If you know how many
American dollars it will take for me to send it back then I will buy the
stamps for you if you send the cash. I'll send you the change if you
gave too much (or just put it into over-postage?). U.S folks are reqired
to send stamps or postage meter stamp. This is a non-profit offer because
I truly want others to enjoy this incredible software.

I will post a full description in a week or so but if you send me some
e-mail saying you want it then I will send you a copy of the info to
make sure you don't miss the announcement.

For those of you who are using X on 386/ix you will be in for a real treat.
The only requirement is that you have a sVGA card with the Tseng Labs ET4000
chipset (or ET3000) on it and a suitable monitor (of course, Multisyn II in
my case). Tom has already posted his release announcement but YES it is as
AWESOME as you have heard. I dare say that his work in this area is so good
that commercial vendors are probably looking at the code to play catch-up.
He was not in a position, as commercial vendors are, of having to support
so many different VGA cards and getting preoccupied with support. He picked
the best chipset for the job and hacked the server of your dreams.

BTW, I bought a cheapy ET4000 card from SWAN for $189 w/512K but am going
to upgrade to the 1024K. I can only get up to 800x600 with 256 colors
on my NEC but his server will use the extra memory for virtual screen
space and do panning when your mouse pointer hits a screen edge.

I will also distribute the source code patches that go with x11r4 pl18.
This part is only about 425K compressed. James Van Artsdalen has had
problems getting shared libraries to work from the sources (and he is no
beginner) but the ones that come from Tom's distribution are *golden*.

I'm sorry, but with school I'm to busy right now to respond to "pointer"
requests (i.e. I don't know about Esix or SCO ports and I don't have a list
of ET4000 cards). Please, just those who want me to send them my address and
number of disks info should reply. You will get a response from me around
December 14.

NOTE: FTP folks

Tom Roell's distribution is located in the U.S at expo.lcs.mit.edu in
the /pub/contrib directory. Tom's machine in Europe is getting overrun
at times so I'll make you go back to his article to get that address :-).
