[comp.windows.x] Problem displaying DECWindow application on Sun

KenH@tharr.UUCP (Ken Harris) (12/05/90)

We use a third party DECwindow application and would like to use our SUN
SparcStations as X-servers for it. Configuration is MV3900, VMS 5.3 with
MultiNet (UCX) TCP/IP transport to SUN SparcStation 1 with SUN OpenWindows.

It nearly works... windows pop up, the mouse works, window info changes...
but we keep getting the following error repeating on the VAX:

X error event received from server: BadName - font or color does not exist
Failed request major op code 45
 (X_OpenFont)
  .
  .
  .
%XLIB-E-ERROREVENT, error event received from server

The application supplier does not currently support cross platform working but
has assisted by suggesting it is a problem of font naming conventions between
DECwindows and other X implementations, ie. DEC use different names. They
suggest using the Xset command on the SUN before launching the application:

	Xset fp pathname

to set the font pathname appropriate for our MV3900, but I can't see how I
can direct the SUN to look at the VMS filesystem (though we have got MultiNet
CLIENT NFS). Any way I assume the SUN would not understand DECW font files. I
have tried aliasing fonts on the SUN but still no luck.

We are not (yet) Xperts and do not (yet) have the DECW or OpenWindows
programming manuals. Do any Xperts have any experience with or solutions
to these problems.

Please try and mail replies to me as my NEWS access is intermittent. I'm
new to the net so please check my address in the header, I think it is
KenH@tharr.UUCP. Many thanks, Ken.
