We are attempting to install Xkernel on a Sun 3/50 booting from a Sun 3/60 running SunOS 4.1 (the Xkernel is 4.1 based). The problem occurs when attempting to mount /usr via NFS during the 3/50s boot procedure. Instead of the mounting we get the error mount: foo:/export/exec/sun3 server not responding RPC: Unknown protocol Any help would be appreciated. --------------------------------8<-------------------------------- Evan Harris evan@goanna.cs.rmit.OZ.AU Dept. of Computer Science ...!uunet!goanna.cs.rmit.OZ.AU!evan RMIT, Australia

Yes, I saw the same thing just this last Sunday when I installed it.
The problem I had was a Sun4/110 4.0.3 server trying to serve a
Sun3/50 4.1 client. The problem was the mount command itself --
apparently 4.1 believes in some things not known to 4.0.3. I backed
out to a SunOS 3.5 mount command for the 3/50 and everything worked
just fine thereafter. I just had to remove the -n option from the
mounts in rc.Xboot, and put ">/etc/mtab" above the mounts.
Very nice. A _very_ fast X terminal.

Yup. I fount that one too.
4.1 needs a file in /etc called protocols containing the following
stuff:
udp 17 UDP # user datagram protocol
pup 12 PUP # PARC universal packet protocol
tcp 6 TCP # transmission control protocol
ggp 3 GGP # gateway-gateway protocol
igmp 2 IGMP # internet group multicast protocol
icmp 1 ICMP # internet control message protocol
ip 0 IP # internet protocol, pseudo protocol number
Now, why in EARTH put that in a file? IS sun afraid that the protocol
numbers are about to change.....????????
(I found this by running "etherfind -r" during the boot and seeing a
zillion lookups for protocols....)
