[comp.windows.x] xrn bug

staby@cs.uct.ac.za (Thorsten Staby) (12/04/90)

I have spent the last couple of hours installing xrn under X11R4 on
a sun sparc station 1+ running OS 4.1 . When running xrn, it comes
up with the main interface that lets you select newsgroups etc. As
soon as I want to read any of the news groups, xrn crashes on a SEGV
signal in function XrmStringToQuark which is in libX11, whatever
XrmStringToQurak accomplishes.

It does not seem to be possible to debug xrn further than XtMainLoop
without having to recompile XrmStringToQuark with the debug option set
and trying to figure out what is going wrong. I would like to avoid
this time consuming process (loading source etc. etc.)

Is there anyone out there running xrn and has encountered similar problems ?
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You should have mentioned the version of xrn. I encountered the same problems
when I took the sources from the MIT-distribution tape. They disappear
if you fetch a younger version (e.g. xrn-6.13) from expo.lcs.mit.edu.
I decided to do so and it works what you may have noticed by leading |>
in cited text ;-)

By the way: is there someone who succeded to compile xrn 6.13 in a MOTIF-
environment (say: AIX 3.1, HP-UX 7.0 or EP/IX 1.2.3 [MIPS/CDC])?

I have successfully built and am using version 6.13 in the Motif form. I used
version 1.1.1 (but have also used 1.1.0) of Motif. The uderlying OS's that I
have used include Ultrix 3.1, 4.* and OSF/1 (various revisions). I have been
using MIT's X11R4, not DECwindows for all of my work...
