[net.news] New news group about handicapped?

wtm@bunker.UUCP (William T. McGarry) (08/11/85)

I would like to know if there is any interest out there in starting
a news group about handicapped people.

My 2 1/2 year old son, Alexander, has Down's Syndrome so naturally
I would be most interested in articles about handicapped children and
particulary about children with Down's. But there are many areas which
are common to all handicapped people of all ages and I feel that a
news group about all handicapped people would be helpful to both
handicapped people themselves as well as relatives and friends.

Please feel free to either respond to me directly via e-mail or to
post an article. In either case, I will present some sort of summary
in several weeks, and if there is enough interest, I will try to get
the new group started.

--Even though I am generally against posting one article to more than
one news group, I am posting this article to several groups that
seem appropriate since this is an important issue to me.

--Some people object to the word handicapped. If you are one of these
people, please don't flame me. Instead, tell me a better way to say it.

I think this would be an interesting subject to discuss, but I think it would
be more appropriate to begin the discussions in net.med, and if interest is
high enough we could then create a subgroup.

Depending on the particular person's situation, "disabled" is sometimes the
preferred euphemism. Perhaps we could call the group (if traffic warranted
its creation) net.med.disabled or something of the sort.
