Hi netters, We were out looking for good (& cheap) X terminals, and need some advice in the matter. First of all, if there are any suggestions to the effect -- including contacts and prices. Secondly, we have a quote from Visual Technology for a X-14/ES terminal. Now, if there is anyone out there who might be using this or any of the other X series terminal from the same joint, I would appreciate some advice to the effect. Thanks in advance. Monochrome NCD 16 X-terminals are nice and cheap. but the 8bit NCD 19 X-terminals are very nice, faster and still cheap. I have not tried the newest Tektronix X-terminals, but they claim to be faster. The first one we used, about 6 months ago, was the XN-10 and it was too slow compete. -- Eric Taylor Baylor College of Medicine etaylor@wilkins.bcm.tmc.edu (713) 798-3776

I believe we had the low end model, for it only had a serial port (the higher end model(s) have ethernet connections). I was rather impressed with the performance of the machine---it only took about 20 seconds from login time (one runs the X setup stuff from the prompt) to production time with windows. When a new window application is run (e.g. xrn), the window outline would come up right away, but it would take a few seconds more for the application to be ready to use. The slowest speed at which we ran it was 9600 bps via modem (which was not, incidentally, much slower than running it at 9600 bps directly connected to the machine)---it wasn't -too- bad. 19.2 Kbps directly connected was much better. The machine we had had a smallish window, but it had a virtual desktop in the vertical direction. In other words, one could scroll the desktop from top to bottom, to get about 700 x 920 pixels. I don't know the price, but the professor for whom I set it up said it only cost about $1000.00. Hope this info is useful. Netters, Earlier I had put in a request for information on some cheap X terminals. I had asked for info on both general X terminals and in particular, for Visual Technology X14 and other series terminals. Here is a summary of the 5 responses I solicited so far. ========================================================================= #1 We have (IMHO) a good cheap X terminal. It's not shipping yet, but it was announced at Interop. It has a 68020, 1280x1024 mono graphics on a 17" tube, and runs quite fast. It is called the Wyse WY-X5. The closest sales office is in Dallas (214)-869-1565 8100 Springwood Drive Irving, TX 75063 (ok, so it's Irving :-) I'm sure they would love to talk at you... ========================================================================= #2 I just got my X14 test unit, so I can't really give you my opinion yet, but we have about 200 of the X15's and they're great. The response is good, X11R4 is nice, full XDMCP support... The best thing is that Visual has been really helpful with any problems. My first impressions of the X14: it's a small terminal - small screen, small footprint: good for someone who doesn't want to have his desk dominated by a terminal. Don't believe the name, though - it has a 12" diagonal tube. The X15s have 13" diagonal tubes. I have an X15 Turbo, which I like a lot, although I hear it might be getting discontinued. They just announced a color X terminal that allows you to use your own monitor, so if you have any color monitors, you won't be able to beat the price. ======================================================================== #3 Did you try the following: NCD Graphon Tektronix Digital (I think VT1000, guess it is primarily DECWindows) Sun SLC series. These are some of the primary vendors as far as i know. I think you could be looking into as much as $1000 (Graphon) to say $5000 (NCD) depending on what you are fishing for. I also believe that NCD gives around 39% discount to educational institutions. If u want to consider yourself one. (8-) I also think there used to be a run of the Performance of these and a lot of other XTerminals in comp.windows.x some time earlier. I have used Graphons, NCD's to an interesting effect. Programmers would rather have an NCD instead of an IBM RT !!. I could probably say that NCD's seem to be more intersting apart from their prices. ============================================================================= #4 I am currently using a Visual X-15 terminal with 2 MB RAM memory and the network booted 3.0 software and am very satisfied with it. =========================================================================== #5 Network Computing Devices offers a wide range of X-terminals. The NCD15b Network Display Station is the most economical member of NCD's line. It features a 15-inch monochrome display, 1024 x 800 resolution, 68000 processor, and is standard with 2 MB memory (expandable to 5 MB). Combined with NCDware, NCD's enhanced X server software, this unit is designed to provide highly efficient X and graphics operations. The NCD15b is available at $1495 list price. NCD also offers a 39% educational discount on this product and across the entire product line. At your convenience, please email your mailing address or fax number so information on this product and other NCD products can be forwarded to you. If you have any further questions, please contact me via email or at (415) 691-2558. Thank you, Vicki Maniglia vicki@ncd.com ============================================================================ If I get any further descriptions, I'll post them at the earliest. Thanx to everyone who sent me the info. Aashish hista@jane.uh.edu
