XPM is designed for storing/retrieving X pixmaps to/from files and is part of
the contrib to X, so I would suggest you to use it. In addition, converters to
PPM now exist and should provide to anyone to get easely the saved pixmap in
any other desired format.
But this is a question which I believe interests more and more people and it's
why I will chair a BOF about "Icon Formats for X Window" at the X Conference
January Tuesday 15th. In order to make this BOF as interesting as possible, I
would be pleased to know if anyone has a special point he would like to discuss
about, so please mail me your suggestions and/or requests.
