[comp.windows.x] PEX

arnold@ux.cs.man.ac.uk (Toby Howard) (05/18/89)

What is the current status of PEX? When is the prototype implementation
expected? And is there any PEXy stuff on the latest X release?

Thanks
Toby

What is the current status of PEX?

PEX is alive and kicking. A group of Consortium members have sponsored
development of a sample implementation, and that work is under full steam.
Implementation efforts are turning up some problems in the spec, and these
are being dealt with on a continuing basis. At some point a revised spec
will go out for public comment.

When is the prototype implementation expected?

The public sample implementation is due in the late fall of 1990 (depending
somewhat on timing with whatever Rn is around that time). Sponsors of
the effort are of course seeing versions much earlier than that (like one
real soon now).

And is there any PEXy stuff on the latest X release?

The SIGGRAPH '88 demo code is in R3 contrib.

PEX gurus:

Will PEX support simultaneous manipulation and display of pixel data (a la X)
and hierarchical graphics data (a la PHIGS) or will this be addressed with an
   escape feature?

Any programmer-friendly replies would be greatly appreciated. Tia.

When the PEX protocol is finally hammered out, is
the PEX standards committee going to provide a standard
API that will work with any visual on a PEX station?

I mean a FULLY implemented API, not just the names of
the routines that are going to be there.

The various PEX api's I have tested to date all seem to
assume some stupid visual exists.

Being interested in learning things about PEX, I read the useful
posting on "Frequently Asked Questions about X with Answers"
I have obtained the documents on the PEX protocol and PEX encoding
from expo.lcs.mit.edu. The protocol document (version 5.0P) refers
to a document called "PEX Introduction and Overview", which I have
not been able to locate on expo. The versions on
giza.cis.ohio-state.edu seem to be out-of-date.
Is this intro publicly available somewhere?

Does anyone know how easily existing PHIGS programs will convert to
PEX programs using X-windows?

For Sun Sparc systems, will there be noticable performance differences
between PEX running in immediate mode and XGL?

Please send me e-mail with answers, as I am not a regular reader of
this list. Also, post answers to comp.windows.x as well. Thanks in
advance for any help related to these questions!
