[comp.windows.x] XView <-> 4-bit grayscale conflict

gnd@targhee.idaho.amdahl.com (Greg Darnell) (01/17/91)

We currently have a Sun4 server handling Tektronix XP23 4-bit grayscale
terminals. We would like to use some of Sun's DeskSet tools that use the
XView toolkit, because they are nicely integrated and are handy in an
office environment (particularly the calendar manager and file manager).

Unfortunately, since Sun does not offer a 4-bit (16-level) color or gray
scale product, they don't support 4-bit grayscale, so that XView does not
work well on our terminals with some icons.

In particular, trying to iconify cm or filemgr gives the following error
 messages:
XView warning: xv_rop: can't handle drawables of different depth
XView warning: xv_rop: xv_rop_internal failed

Some of these problems can be worked around by creating a monochrome icon
and overriding the program's default using the -WI parameter; however,
this does not work for all cases, such as the filemgr's wastebasket.

So, this is both a warning to anyone contemplating such an environment to
watch out for the hazards of 4-bit grayscale, and a request for help from
anyone who has found a more global solution. Unfortunately, the XP23 does
not allow itself to be configured as monochrome, so that solution is out
(but I wouldn't want to lose the grayscale anyway).

Any other ideas?

These opinions are mine and do not reflect the views of my employer.
