The ad means application default. At least, that seems to be the intended meaning from a perusal of the InstallAppDefaults() macro in Imake.rules, which I was just reading this morning for fun and profit. The xxx.ad file is installed by InstallAppDefaults() into $(XAPPLOADDIR)/xxx. XAPPLOADDIR appears to have a default value of $(LIBDIR)/app-defaults. -- Paul DuBois dubois@primate.wisc.edu
