Let me preface this article with the disclaimer that I have not built X before (I thought maybe that would get me some latitude here). I have been given the task of building X R4 for the SLC. It seemed to build relatively successfully. By that I mean that everything compiled and linked fine. In the process of building, it tries to run rgb to create rgb.pag and .dir. This core dumped. But, everything else was fine in the log file. Is that life threatening for the server to run on this poor little monochrome box? This SLC has its own attached disk running 4.1.1. When I try to start the server with xinit, the root window changes, the mouse cursor gets set, then...boom. fatal I/O error (54 I believe is the first one, followed by others). Is there a trick here? btw, xterm is setuid root. thanks. -gary
