[comp.windows.x] Problem installing X11R4 in ULTRIX2.2

vjcarey@sphunix.sph.jhu.EDU (Vincent J. Carey) (01/24/91)

We have compiled (unpatched) X11R4 on an ULTRIX2.2 system (VS2000)
without any errors. Attempted test of system with
xinit on this VS2000 yields

------------start error message---------

Getting interface configuration: Can't assign requested address
couldn't open qvss

Fatal server bug!
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 32 (Broken pipe) on X server ""
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
The connection was probably broken by a server shutdown or KillClient

-----------------end---------------------

It seems to want to core dump at this time, but has an NFS
write error (which gives error identifying inode 15317, which
in this case is /usr/bin/X11/core.)

I know this is a highly general message which may indicate a
major organizational problem. But we had no problem installing
on Sun 4/60s -- it took no effort at all in that case.

My major difficulty is in understanding the roles of different
files relevant to X11. The VS2000s were initially running X10
as distributed with ULTRIX, so we never had to think about
details of the windowing system (and didn't.)

Now, I am wondering
  a) what is the "requested address"? -- an internet address? I know
that the -display arg of many clients uses an internet address
  as a potential parameter.

  b) what is "qvss"? -- we have a file called Xqvss, presumably
the residence of the "server". is the reference to "qvss"
a mangling by the error-message generating program? or is
"qvss" a file we should have?

  c) what is "XIO"? Why doesn't it fill in the quotes identifying
  the X server ""?

  d) what is the role of the /etc/ttys file in the ultrix
setup of X11? in the sun implementation, we just manually
start xinit and our local .*rc files set everything up.
since we can't even start xinit on the VS2000, we wondered
if the various parameters in the ttyv0 line in /etc/ttys
  were incorrect.

Anyone who can give some help on this problem: we would
be most grateful.
