We have been using the MIT sample server on a SPARCstation 1 with SunOS 4.0.3 for some time, and execution has been fine. However, recently, it has become desirable to switch to the server Sun ships (Xnews) with OpenWindows 2.0. I have heard rumors that it is not completely compatible with xdm. Is there truth to this? Also, what other idiosyncrasies does Xnews have? In addition , one other thing. Has anyone ever noticed a problem with xview clients taking focus when SetInput is set to followmouse? I have tried all different resources to make it work, but my xview clients will just not take focus until I click on them. These are the resources I have tried: xview.icccmcompliant, OpenWindows.SetInput, OpenWindows.FocusLenience. None worked. thanks. -- kevin samborn samborn@sunrise.com ...!uunet!ezx!samborn

Is there truth to this? Also, what |> other idiosyncrasies does Xnews have? As far as I know there are two problems, one minor, one major. If you want to run xdm and xnews on the same machine (i.e., local display) the problem is that xnews doesn't understand the HUP signal as the MIT server does (close all connections and initialize itself). But things seem to work fine if you tell xdm to just kill the server altogether and start a new one (although xnews' startup time is significant even on fast machines). This can be done with DisplayManager.XNews.terminateServer: true in xdm-config. The major problem is that xnews doesn't understand the XDMCP protocol to be managed by a remote xdm (it is missing the -query option). Maybe some Sun person can confirm (or even disconfirm) my hope that this will be fixed in OpenWindows 3.0. -- Andreas Stolcke stolcke@icsi.berkeley.edu International Computer Science Institute stolcke@ucbicsi.bitnet 1957 Center St., Suite 600, Berkeley, CA 94704 (415) 642-4274 ext. 126

I am not sure what Armand meant either. Andy.
