[comp.windows.x] Writing to the mouse

epstein@trwacs.UUCP (Jeremy Epstein) (02/01/91)

A question oh great hardware & X gurus.

On my Sun 3, the mouse reports relative movement (at a hardware
level). Hence to warp the pointer, the server need only interpret
the relative movement with respect to a different initial position.
The mouse device driver is unaware of any such warping.

The question: Does there exist any hardware where warping the
pointer would require writing to the device? This seems to imply
that the pointer would provide absolute (rather than relative)
positioning. What sort of devices would they be (i.e., mouse,
trackball, tablet)?

In other words, can I assume that the mouse is ALWAYS a read only
device, or might there be instances where I have to write to it?

Thanks for any ideas!
