What exactly is the purpose of that UNIX domain socket? I haven't seen any
documentation that talks about it.

(I haven't seen it documented anywhere that I can recall either, but I
must have gotten this info from *somewhere*; perhaps the source?)

It is the rendezvous point used when an X connection to unix:0 is
opened, that's all....
