I'm running news version 2.10.2 on a HP9000 running HP-UX rel 4.0 (soon 5.0) (something between system III and system V). I am on a few mailing lists (both from here and from arpa) and I would like to put the mail I receive from these into a local news group so that others on my machine could read them. We do not have a mailing group facility in our system. We can forward mail. Is there any easy way to do this? Thanks, Bernie Gunther

If you get stuff from some mailing list and want to make it available on the local machine, create a LOCAL group for it. The steps are simple: 1. Make a local group prefix (most sites use local) and add it to YOUR MACHINE's listing in your sysfile. EXAMPLE: here is the line for neuro1 (my system) neuro1:na,mod,tx,houston,baylor,ut,net,fa,to.neuro1,local:B: ^^^^^ local is the prefix for groups that are not sent anywhere else. This prefix should NOT appear in any other listing in the sys file (or news will distribute it). 2. Create the local groups. Issue the "inews -C local.groupname" as the news super-user. Change "groupname" to the name you want to call the list on your machine. This will create the group itself and allow people to read and post to it (NOTE: Postings will not leave the machine, but a local discussion might start as a result of an article.) 3. Add the group to the "localgroups" file in the news directory (usually /usr/lib/news). 4. Now, when you receive an item from your mailing list, you can post it the the local group for all to read. Hope this is helpful. -- Stan uucp:{ihnp4!shell,rice}!neuro1!sob Opinions expressed Olan ARPA:sob@rice.arpa here are ONLY mine & Barber CIS:71565,623 BBS:(713)660-9262 noone else's.
