Recently the large volume of traffic over the illegal creation and subsequent rather high and mighty removal of net.internat has raged back and forth across the net. Or has it ? For the last week the broad view has been that net.internat is a good thing, the only voice raised against it has been that of a self appointed arbiter of our own (the net's) well being. Fair enough -- we all owe to those who run this service for us, and it is VERY annoying when people bypass the rules that have been set up to make a difficult task that much easier. *However* the level of inflexibility demonstrated reminds me of the early versions of GCOS ( :-)). This news group deserves to exist for at least two reasons :- (1) There have been many occasions when we of the non-US population have just wished that the date was slightly differently arranged, or that we could buy that really great sounding car on sale in California. (2) The people, us, the users, the ones that read the stuff,..... seem to want it. Even if the gods who run the system for us are doing us a service -- they are required to give us the service we want. They have not been elected and have no given power, only what they choose to take. Of all the groups already on the system and some of the recent suggestions (how about net.rundown.spaf :-)) this must be one that is most important and relevant to the life we as users lead. If costs are rising then I can see no argument in favour of retaining those groups that have no relevance to the institutions that are paying. If you want to compare notes on ski resorts then send them to a standard BB where you pay for connect time. This is a vote for net.internat ... and a vote *against* non relevant groups. Let's get rid of these things that have little use to those who pay for our indulgence. I would like to see some views on groups that should cease, let's vote on that. Craig. (sorry about the high level of FLAME :-) :-) :-) )

As much as we need order, spaf went too far in removing net.internat. I too vote that it be re-instated, and that there be more discussion before 'the powers that be' go on a hunt. -- Opinions expressed are public domain, and do not belong to Lotus Development Corp. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Simcha-Yitzchak Lerner {genrad|ihnp4|ima}!wjh12!talcott!sesame!slerner {cbosgd|harvard}!talcott!sesame!slerner talcott!sesame!slerner@harvard.ARPA
