If you do not have to pay for a service, the value of that service is worth far less than if you have a vested interest. If there is no direct cost to the user, said user is far more likely to [mis]use the service. The result is a lack of forethought in posted messages -- like ridiculous exchanges that take entirely too much time and bandwidth. The signal-to-noise ratio then decreases. I would like to see a direct cost for each message posted, or see the backbone nodes remove "noisy" newsgroups. My time it too valuable to waste doing manual noise reduction.
