[net.news] Split the net.

mmm@weitek.UUCP (Mark Thorson) (11/08/85)

It appears to me that many users want a free-flowing net for discussing
social/personal/cultural topics while others want the resources of the
net to be reserved for 4.2bsd bug fixes and the like.

So why not split it. I'm sure many sites have a distinct mindset towards
one side or the other. Sites which can afford to participate in both
would be gateways. I'm sure there would be many of the latter.

One net could have a funny-money accounting system and strict censorship
of inappropriate, unprofessional messages.

The other net would have no accounting, and would restrict itself to non-
work related topics.

Perhaps a third net would handle Macintosh shareware.

With the inevitable growth of the net, something is bound to happen.
Either it will collapse of its own weight, or its collapse will be managed.

I suggest the net be split, and that the newsgroups be split between the two
nets. That is to say, each newsgroup would end up in one net or the other
but not both.
