[comp.windows.x] X and Xterminals on a IBM Risc 6000 530

hart@tasman.cc.utas.edu.au (Bill Hart) (02/27/91)

I am doing this for the local department of parks and wildlife who have an
IBM R6000/530, and who run a Geographic Information System. They have a
number of questions about X on the IBM and the X terminals which the
local IBM boys have been unable to give them definite answers on. So if
anyone out there can give the benefit of their experience they would be
very grateful. They are running the IBM version of X (would they be
better off with the MIT version ?). Here are their queries :

1) How many X colour X terminals will the 530 support (for stuff like GIS)
and how much memory will the 530 need per X terminal ?

2) Is the IBM X software compatible with other xterminals (can you stick
some server software on the IBM download it to a generic X terminal and
use it) ?

3) They have a 24bit frame buffer on the 530, and want 8bit xterminals,
can the 8bit colour pallette be selected from the 24 bit colour pallette
(so the GIS stuff has same hues etc as it does on the console, with a
more limited range of colours of course) ?

Thanks for any help, I will summarize if there is interest.
