[net.news] Shareware and the NET

allbery@ncoast.UUCP (Brandon S. Allbery) (10/27/85)

[We are beginning to need net.sources.d, guys -- is it THAT important?]

If we are to ban shareware because the author asks for somethiong in return, I
suggest we also ban a series of programs that show up on the net and often
have requests posted with them for donations of time and effort in
maintaining, etc. the programs and devising and coding new features -- which
is as much ``personal gain'' on the part of the poster as that of a 3rd party
posting shareware, which is apparently what is going on now.

I am talking about netnews.

Following strictly the arguments against shareware would eventually lead to
this kind of crap. Who cares about requests for donations? How many of you
actually donate? And besides, the Internet seems not to care...

Now can we PLEASE get back to serious stuff? Or has the Chuq/Lauren split
given everyone reading net.news a case of brain-rot?

Shareware, unlike a chain letter, can be useful. A more interesting
question is if net.sources.mac gets nuked because of shareware postings,
then shouldn't net.forsale and net.wanted get nuked also? ( and don't
forget net.general, which is only used to sell cars and condominiums in
New Jersey :-) )
