Has anyone w2riiten a screen lock program for X 10.4?
Also, I have X working on a Sun 3/260, but I have
deleted the apollo driver source code for 10.4, does
anyone know where I can get another copy?

Thanks in Advance, Jesse Driver.

I'd like to say an official thank you to the people who responded to my
postings about Xr11 and HelloWorld (William King, Vince Kraemer, Ken Krippner,
and whoever else has written since). I didn't know if anyone would respond to
either posting. You're making my life much easier. Thank you!

Well, as a bemused installer of XX11R3, I now have the opportunity to see
if this newsgroup is a good source of consulting help... (;-)

The problem is that, after several days of coming up and running somewhat
happily, xinit suddenly picked up some curious new behavior. When I run
xinit, it says:

| X Toolkit Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "White"
| X Toolkit Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Black"
| X Toolkit Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "white"
| X Toolkit Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "black"
|
| waiting for X server to shut down

It then starts up the server and an xterm, which comes up with its window
white-on-white. I can actually use the window normally, but no text ever
appears. I can do things like "uwm&", and uwm comes up. When I ask uwm
to start, for instance, an xmh, it works, and the window and buttons all
look normal, but the text windows are white-on-white.

The thing to understand is that this is a Sun 3/260 with a monochrome
display. I've wandered through the manuals, trying to figure out what
I might have told it that makes it think this is a color display, and
perhaps in a week or a month or a year I'd eventually figure it out, if
I were to persevere. But it'd sure be nice if someone more knowledgeable
than I could tell me how I convince it that the display is monochrome.

It seems that there oughta be some sort of startup file for xinit (like
the .suntools file for Suntools), but I can't find any mention of it (or
maybe I'm not recognizing it when I read it) in the manuals. So far, I've
been starting up wm or uwm by hand, then opening up other windows by hand,
and positioning them by hand. This is getting old; it seems like there
should be some way to automate it, known to experienced users, and probably
described on page 157 of the manual. Any pointers?

How hard is it to port from SunView to X Windows 11?

What is involved?

Thanks!

Two answers:
1. Sun is developing an SunView compatibility package for X. It is
currently called XView, formerly called View2 and SunView 2.0. Using
this package, SunView programs should port fairly (small source code
changes) easily to X.

2. The X Toolkit with certain widget sets matches (or exceeds) most
of the functionality of SunView. I expect that almost anything doable
in SunView is doable using the X Toolkit and a good widget set. If
you're not doing anything real tricky in SunView, the port is very
simple. Both X Toolkit widgets and SunView panel items are controlled in
the same way: set resources (including callbacks) through argument lists,
realize the widgets/panel items, then dispatch events through main loop.
Both SunView and the X Toolkit allow you to dynamically get and set
resources, though the X Toolkit generally gives you more flexibility.
The larger widget sets, such as those from HP and AT&T probably have
widget equivalents to about all of SunView, but the MIT Athena widget
set is missing some things, such as an equivalent to SunView's canvas.

I am also interested in the window manager for MOTIF. I keep
reading references to it, but there was none with the MOTIF
stuff on expo.

Wasn't there a somewhat comprehensive listing of X11-based software products
posted to this list sometime late last year? Could either the author of same
or someone who saved it volunteer to send it to me?

In particular, I am interested in compiling a list of potential 2D graphics
programming support libraries (something more comprehensive and hopefully
easier to use than directly using Xlib graphics). If anyone has contributions
they would care to forward to me, I would appreciate it. I found a few
pointers in the Frequently Asked Questions posting, but I am sure there must be
more.

If I am not forwarded a copy of the comprehensive X11 products list (assuming I
correctly recall such a critter having ever existed ;-) and I get a reasonable
set of responses on graphics libraries, I will post a summary ...
