[comp.windows.x] IBM Xterminal on Suns

hr@spica.astro.uiuc.edu (Harold Ravlin) (03/03/91)

We are trying out an IBM X terminal on our network and are booting it from
one of our Suns. Everything works OK until the window manager gets run.
When twm is run from either an 8MB diskless 3/75 running OS 4.0.3 or
a 4MB diskfull (2 70MB drives) 3/50 running OS 4.1 performance is BETTER
than when the window manager is run from either our 4/490 or SPARCstation 2,
both running OS 4.1.1.

On the Sun 3s when a user tries to move a window, the outline more or less
keeps up. On the SPARCs, it is possible to move the mouse to each of the
4 corners of the screen before the outline moves at all! Menu performance
is similarly poor on the SPARCs.

Once a client program has been started, it seems to work reasonable well. Only
the window manager has problems.

Renicing twm to -5 or -8 significantly helps performance on the SPARCs, but
it still doesn't work as well as on the little Sun 3s.

Twm running on the SPARCsystems controls windows running on SPARCstations
very well. The only problem is driving the IBM X terminal.

Any suggestions?
