[comp.windows.x] GeoClock for X

cjackso@uswnvg.UUCP (Clay Jackson) (03/06/91)

Does anyone know if there is a PD/shareware version of GeoClock
(a world map that displays light and dark - ala the $1300 clock
of te same name) that runs under X (I'm running SCO's OpenDesktop).

Thanks!

Get sunclock.tar.Z with anonymous FTP from the contrib directory on
export.lcs.mit.edu.

First of all, just wanted to say that I like the program myself. But,
it seems odd that it cannot be resized. I assume this has something
to do with the fact that it was exported from SunTools source.

My question is: are there any other similiar programs available which
do allow resize and basic X11R4 command line options?

Thanks for any pointers.

Sunclock cannot be resized (easily or with quality) because the clock
image used is a bitmap. It isn't a list of vectors.

One thing you can do (which I did) is to grab the source, resize the bitmap
(using xv, pbm, or similar), clean up the bitmap (using your favorite
bitmap/pixmap editor), change the bitmaps.h include file, and recompile.

If anyone wants a hacked 320x160 or 1024x512 world bitmap for sunclock,
let me know, and I'll mail it/them to you. (Default is 640x320.)
(Sorry, I did not create 1152x576 or 1280x640 versions.)

Sunclock is a wonderful program! One of the best programs of its kind
that I've seen in X-land. Be happy with it!

Sir,

I am just a new commer to the world of X. As usual I have got myself initiated into
Oliver Jones and Young's book. So far I did not get a chance to look into
a code which deals with bitmaps/ pixmaps. I have just started on the chapter
on bitmaps/pixmaps in Youngs book. I find the best way to learn xXZ is to go
through lot of example programs rather than just reading the books.

I could not understand much about what you were talking in terms of the
Geoclock etc. but I would like to see the source code if possible and
also the bitmaps so that I can play with them. Is that a software for
[A[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[C[CMay I have that program
or does it have some copyright etc protections.

BTW I have used a bitmap editor but where should I look for a pixmap editor?
I am using SONY NEWS/SUN SPARC/IBM 6000 machines.

Ignore any question which appears to be dumb because I am still an infant
as far as X goes.

Thank you
Sincerely
(NB: today is the first day of my subscription to this newsgroup so I am
ignorant of whatever hapepened/happens here )

The original version, on Sunview was even better.

...and the Open Windows demo technochron (sp?) is even better!

You can resize the window and the map will redraw to fit
the new size. It even draws in the borders.

Unfortunately, the borders look messy when iconified,
and it's just too slow on my Sun 3/60.

Is the source to either of these programs available?
If so, could somebody point me to it. I'd like a copy.

OK, I got a copy of the Sunview version (thanks to Dale Arends).
Since I don't have Sunview on my HP workstation, I'm reading the
source to try to figure out why it's better than the recently posted
sunclock program. Could somebody give me a hint:

What did Sunview's sunclock do that the X sunclock doesn't?

Now this sounds impressive. What else does it do? Color? Zoom?
AM/FM/Cassette? 5 speed? Turbo?

Could somebody e-mail me the source to TechnoChron?

Thanks,

Roger
