[comp.windows.x] Xdm and /etc/fbtab

gas@cs.nott.ac.uk (Alan Shepherd) (04/09/91)

Thanks for the responses about xterm and xdm. It seems that our xterm
had been installed as suid X rather than suid root which explains the
problem !

A second problem I have is that of using xdm with secure windows as
specified in /etc/fbtab for sunos4.1. The idea is that various
devices are chowned to the owner of the console at login and
permissions changed to prevent other people from writing to them.
Unfortunately, xdm always owns the console when using xdmshell (is
this the case if xdm is started at boot time?) and so the devices are
then owned by xdmshell. The only problem I've noticed is that
xsetroot doesn't work from within .xsession (though it will when run
from an xterm).

Does anyone have any experience of this and know of a solution ?
