Thanks for the responses about xterm and xdm. It seems that our xterm had been installed as suid X rather than suid root which explains the problem ! A second problem I have is that of using xdm with secure windows as specified in /etc/fbtab for sunos4.1. The idea is that various devices are chowned to the owner of the console at login and permissions changed to prevent other people from writing to them. Unfortunately, xdm always owns the console when using xdmshell (is this the case if xdm is started at boot time?) and so the devices are then owned by xdmshell. The only problem I've noticed is that xsetroot doesn't work from within .xsession (though it will when run from an xterm). Does anyone have any experience of this and know of a solution ?
