[comp.windows.x] problems with R4 xdm - please help

cm@jet.uucp (colin manning) (04/09/91)

We are experiencing problems with the R4 xdm compiled on
Sparcstation running SunOS 4.1.1.

We have some NCD 17c X terminals attached, and sometimes
get the following problems:

1. The terminal sometimes does not manage to load the
fonts that have been configured into xdm, even though
we know for sure that they are there (because normally,
   they DO work).

2. More seriously, it has been observed that xdm seems to
decide its time to restart a login sequence on a terminal
when the user is mid way through a session. When this
happens, you might get 'Password:' appearing out of the
blue in a window, and your keyboard mappings seem to get
messed up (at least when you're running emacs in an
xterm). Then, after about a minute you get 'Login timed
out after 60 seconds' in the window, and then things
seem to get back to normal.

Any ideas anyone ?

All help gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

don't know if this'll be any help but it might help others to help ??

as far as i'm aware fonts are loaded by the X-server NOT by xdm and in
the case of the NCD's this is via nfs or tftp (??!?). so xdm shouldn't
mess up font loading ....

as to your spurious login prompts, are you running xdmcp on the NCD's
and if so does your servers file for xdm contain the names of these
terminals because it shouldn't.

if you have modified the Xsession file please be careful and ensure that
the last entry doesn't complete until you logout.

does the X-terminal function okay when using the Failsafe login ?? if so
then the answer probably lies in your Xsession file.

hope this is food for thought and give assistance
