Hi:
Has anybody patched the Athena Text widget to use menus? My
users (and I) think that X is neat, but ask why they still
have to use the emacs style keystrokes when editing in xmh and
xrn? The ones I've dealt with lately don't even know emacs.
The conversation usually goes: " Isn't it windows?? My
Mac at home, all I do is black it out and click on delete...."
You get the drift. Well whatever the reason, we are moving
our non-computer guru folks to X and I want to make life
easy for them (in particular, editing, mail and news).
So I thought I might (in my vast spare time):
- patch the Athena Text Widget source to add options
to make it menu driven. These extensions would be backward
compatible with the old widget, but if the right resource
variables were turned on, the menus were used. I had
thought of creating an entirely new widget, but I want
this to be drop in compatable with all programs using
the current Text Widget.
- I envision, a standard menu, file, edit, search, etc... and
an optional button line for frequently accessed commands (cut,
paste, etc...) Something ala XRN's configurable buttons.
I would like to know:
- Before I do this, has anybody already done it?
- Is it already there and I don't see it?
- Comments about my suggested approach or
suggestions for an alternate method.
- How to donate what I do to the Free Widget
Foundation? Who do I contact, what are the standards.
Thanks
