Just out of wild curiosity, could someone tell me why when I send compressed news files from my VAX to my SUN, then SUN version of compress produces garbage? All I get is "inbound news if garbled". Is ther something specially I should do to make the compression done on the VAX readable on the SUN? -thanks for any help. I'm trying "sendbatch" instead of "csendbatch" for the time being. the "inbound news is garbled" problem may not be compress. (i.e. it could be bad xmission link.) but it might be compress if you're using old versions. first get compress 4.0 (ftp from seismo) to replace whatever you're running on both machines. there were obscure vax->68000 bugs with very early code. any knowledge of these primitive versions is disavowed. in fact, i put in a request to !panda to delist from the mod.sources archive any code earlier than RCS 4.0. 4.3bsd and news 2.10.3 both use the newer compress (30% faster on sun/vax, less memspace, streamlined command options, etc.) there are still stylistic warts, but nothing has been observed which might affect data integrity. the keeper of the 'cbatch' installation guide which flashed by here briefly should also encourage the use of latest release. ames!jaw
