[comp.windows.x] PostScript Previewer

jonnyg@ROVER.UMD.EDU (Jon Greenblatt) (09/09/88)

I have been trying to port the Crispin Goswell postscript previewer
tp an IBM RT/PC with some problems. I have been tracing for hours and get
nowhere but confused. The problems I have are the following:

1: The fonts come up with a width of 0. I tried tracing the font code
but the caching stuff got real confusing, I could not track down
exactly how the fonts are read in. I noticed the initial
installation does not create the cache directory and
subdirectories but the whole thing worked correctly on a VAX
	    even without the cache directory.

2: The speedups bomb on the RT, this is not important to me at this
	   point.

I have changed the X11.c driver to support a fake version of backing
store, real backing store does not work on the RT's as of yet. If you
are interested in this let me know, right now it is somewhat dependent on
the RT server implementation but that is a easy but kludgey change to make.

Greetings.

Does anyone know where I could get the source code (or, failing that,
Sun object code) for an X11R2 client that provides PostScript preview
capability. That is, I need something that will take as input a
file in PostScript form and display the file on the screen as it would
appear if printed on a PostScript printer. If there's nothing for
R2, how about R3? Send replies via e-mail only; I don't subscribe to
xpert at the moment. Thanks in advance for your replies.

I'm looking for a program that reads a postscript (R) source
file and displays it in an X window. There must be such a
thing, right? Can anyone point me to it?

Thanks in advance

DEC's Ultrix release contains a program dxpsview, which runs on VAXes and pmaxes (DECStation 3100). It creates a bitmap, then downloads that to the server, so as long as you have a DEC machine to run it on you should be able to use any server to s

I'm just a lonely site on the outskirts of Tokyo. No direct connection
to the internet....just a uucp connection to the U.S. I'd like to get the
quintenssential PostScript previewer.

Before grabbing at all the ones that are available...and to keep
KDD from grabbing my wallet...I'd like to get some feed back from this
community as to the pros and cons for ones you have tried.

I did manage to try Ghostscript 2.1 and I must admit it was less
than I expected.

My current platform is a Sun3 running 3.5 SunOs....soon to upgrade
to 4.1.

	Kindly respond via email.
