[comp.windows.x] Motif User Interface Tools?

Shawn.Hayes@samba.acs.unc.edu (Shawn Hayes) (04/03/91)

The company I work for is getting ready to work on a new product
that will run under X Windows using Motif. I'm interested in hearing any
complaints/suggestions/experiences with tools for generating a User Interface
for X- Windows. Three products that we are aware of are XBuild, ezX, and UIMX.
If you've worked with any of these please tell me what you think of the
products. flso if you know of any tools that would work on SCO Unix I'd like
to hear of them as our target machine will be SCO Unix, but most of our
development will be on HPUX.

Since you use this newsgroup for advertising, let me express some
concerns about UIMX. Note I am not disputing it's features nor
quality - UIMX most likely is the strongest competitor in the field
and, as you correctly note, almost each of the UI builders has it's
    Achille's heel.

    1) When it will be possible (and how) to add user written widgets
       to the tool ?

    2) UIMX generates the "C" code. This implies that anytime you change
the user interface (for example add/remove menu buttons), your
application must be re-linked. No problem during development,
but I certainly don't want to relink in the field to accomodate
       site customizations.
Are there any plans to support Wcl as a UIMX output, so that unless
there is a new functionality, the application need not be relinked ?

    3) Several UI buildres (public domain Dirt for example) support concept
of "templates" - predefined collections of object that you can
       merely instantiate(with modification).
Anything similar coming up in UIMX ?
