[net.news] Computing and Social Responsibility

craig@comp.lancs.ac.uk (Craig Wylie) (03/04/86)

In the recent past there has been a large amount of traffic on the
problems, both moral and technical, of the SDI project. Many scientists
all over the world have stated their objections and refused to work on
the project or accept money from the SDI fund.

In the UK there has been the formation of several groups, based at
Universities, who are worried about the social consequences of
computing science. These groups have often been prompted by the
SDI question although they do not limit themselves to this question.

The group here at Lancaster is interested in areas such as :

	SDI
	Women in Computing
	Education
	Health and Safety
	Privacy and Security

Although the subjects are catered for in several different groups
I wish to propose that a separate group be set up to tackle this
particular area. I am for example not particularly interested in
Women Composers but I am interested in areas addressing Equality of
Opertunity and Employment in Computing. Furthermore we don't get
net.women in Europe unless cross posted to net.music or the like.

Proposal :
^^^^^^^^^^

The creation of net.csr (I'm open to suggestions about the name)

Votes and comments to me and I will summarise.

Thanks

Craig.
