[comp.windows.x] Summary: gcc for i860

jonesm@nic.cerf.net (John Reading) (05/11/91)

As the title promises, this gives the results of my query regarding
gcc for the i860, but first, an apology...

I really meant to say I want to implement X *clients* on the Alliant
fx2800. I'm new to X, but I really should know which is a client and
which is a server. (For the curious - my server will be on a [gasp]
Symbolics 3670 :-)

A number of people were kind enough to tell me that the gcc distribution
includes a port for the i860, although everybody indicated that it is
less than perfect.

Since my problems actually dealt with the C preprocessor, several
people pointed me toward the cpp included with the X distribution. I
actually had tried this cpp first, and not had success with it (I was
not able to get it to recognize lines starting with '# ' as comments,
although that construct is widely used in the X sources).
mouse@larry.mcrcim.mcgill.edu pointed me toward a cpp which s/he wrote
and can be had by ftp from 132.206.1.1 in X/XNeXT/cpp*. I have not
actually used this (see next paragraph).

Finally, timv@ccad.uiowa was kind enough to answer my REAL question
(even though I didn't ask it :-) which was "How do I compile the X
distribution for an Alliant fx2800?" The answer is an alliant.cf file
which I would be glad to email out if anybody wants it.

I have now compiled the X distribution, and am ready to see if I can
make it work with the X server I purchased from Symbolics. Anybody
out there want to lay odds that I end up buying the X implementation
from Alliant?

Thanks to one and all who responded. You were very kind, and I may even
be able to convince my employer to keep allowing me access to the net!
