[comp.windows.x] Problems installing X11R4 on SUN-OS 4.0.1

messer@dri.com (adam) (05/11/91)

I have been given the job of porting the Xwindows server to a non-unix
operating system. I have been given a SUN 386i workstation to use as a
development system. The system is running SUN-OS 4.0.1. I felt it would
help me to see a running Xwindows system. So I decided to download the
source from uunet and build it. I uucp'd the first tape down to the
SUN and proceeded to build it. The 'make World' went flawlessly. The
problems started when I tried to do the 'make Install'. Everything goes
along OK for a while, then I get the following errors:

../../.././fonts/mkfontdir/mkfontdir .
ld.so: libXmu.so.4: not found
*** Error code 127
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `fonts.dir'
Current working directory /files1/home/users/xwindows/R4/mit/fonts/bdf/misc
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `install'
Current working directory /files1/home/users/xwindows/R4/mit/fonts/bdf
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `install'
Current working directory /files1/home/users/xwindows/R4/mit/fonts
*** Error code 1
make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `install'

I realized that I hadn't downloaded any of the fixes, so I grabbed them. Then
I found out that I needed the 'patch' program, so I downloaded it and built
it with no problems. After diligently aplying all the fixes I started all
over again. The build again completed without a problem. The install failed
in exatly the same place.

I could try poking arround and renaming/copyinf files, but I thought it might
be easier to ask people with more experiance. Does anyone out there know what
I should do to get past this problem and complete my install. I would be
happy with the name and address of someone who could help!

Thanks in advance,
Adam Messer
