This is a basic inquiry into the future of X programming. I would like to start learning to program in the X environment, and would appreciate responses be sent to me; I will post a summary. Background: I am a sophomore at Boston University and I work for two different computing departments. I am a senior consultant for the main computing department (Info Tech) and I am also the system administrator for a couple of Sun labs. I have taken one C course, and am a good programmer in general, but I will certainly need more practice with C itself before tackling X. Problem: One department has gone Motif and the other OpenLook. What I need to decide is which I am going to learn. I can get/have manuals for both, and would like some pointers to the good beginning books for either/both. I am told OSF has gone Motif, and so my question is this: which would be most beneficial to me in the long wrong? It appears that Motif is, but I can get/have unlimited resources for OpenLook. I will also be asked to write some programs for my Sun labs as demos for them, so I seem to be in a bind. I have the time (I think) to devote myself to learning it, but what should I learn? I will post a summary to the net if there is sufficient response. If you do not wish to be mentioned in the summary, please state so in any correspondence and I will honor your request. *8-) Thank you for your time. jc -- -- James Cameron (jc@raven.bu.edu) Signal Processing and Interpretation Lab.
