Recently I posted some information about the Usenix Association's call for proposals to fund solutions to UUCP and/or USENET problems. Apparently some people have gotten the mistaken notion that this request for proposals was published because the Usenix Association had decided to reject any further funding of the "Stargate" project, and therefore we were looking for a replacement. I would like to clear up this misconception. The Usenix Association has been funding (at a quite modest level) the Stargate project as an experiment. The part we have funded is now drawing to a close. However, we are certainly open to a proposal to continue or expand the Stargate project. In fact, we do expect to receive and consider a Stargate proposal in the not too distant future. However, the Usenix Association would definitely like to receive *other* proposals. We would like to see some variety of ideas and approaches. We will then make funding decisions based upon our best evaluation of the proposals received. We may fund none, some, or all of the proposals received, depending on our judgement of the value to our membership. But this does *not* reflect a decision to "terminate" Stargate. Rather, we are asking the question: "Where do we go from here?" / Michael Tilson / {utzoo,decvax,usenix,...}!hcr!hcradm!mike
