Well, it should look something like this:
PannerBackgroundPixmap "/usr4/home/jc/bitmaps/escherknot"
VirtualDesktopBackgroundPixmap "/usr4/home/jc/X11/bitmaps/world"

The man page was not reorganized to reflect this (or if it was then the "\fB" directives were trashed resulting in the section heading being missed so that you never notice that it is there). You need something like .. Pixmaps { PannerBackgroundPixmap "foo" VirtualDesktopBackgroundPixmap "bar" } I believe these are picked up from the IconDirectory. Neil.
