[comp.windows.x] RFD: comp.windows.x reorganisation

rlee@digitial.co.jp (Robert Lee) (05/21/91)

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before in the past, but I'm
throwing out the idea to see the response & feedback. This is an
informal RFD for the splitting of comp.windows.x.

Personally, I find reading comp.windows.x a paintful experience but
because of its importance, I have to read the newsgroup.

However, splitting the group may solve the question of trying to wade
thru the hundreds of messages to find a topic which interests me
(and others). Here is a possible reorganization of comp.windows.x:

    comp.windows.x.programmer (programming questions & answers)
    comp.windows.x.announcements (moderated. Conference, new programs,
				  patches and FAQ announcements)
comp.windows.x.applications (questions & answers relating to applications)
    comp.windows.x.misc (miscellaneous topics)
comp.windows.x.terminals (inquiries relating to X terminals)

All newsgroups are unmoderated with the exception of
comp.windows.x.announcements.

I would like to see a newsgroup relating to OS & X (e.g. porting problems to
new platforms) but don't quite know how to formulate that newsgroup and I
don't know if such a group is necessary. This topic may be better served
in the comp.windows.x.misc newsgroup.

Also, there may be a need to create a newsgroup relating to window managers.
I would like to hear from people who feel the need of such a group.

I'm not sure if comp.windows.x.terminals is necessary, but personally, I
would find it useful.

I am very receptive to any suggestions to better newsgroup names or
newsgroup reorganization. Also, please tell me if there are any topics
which I may have missed.

Yes, this has been discussed before.

The problem that some of us have (myself included) is that we don't have
a news feed here. We rely on the mailing list (xpert) which relays
comp.windows.x to us. If you were to break up comp.windows.x, we'd
wanna make sure that a mailing list gets set up for each of the groups
you propose. Sure, the amount of news can be overwhelming sometimes...
I should know. I have to wade through it to see if I have any important
mail waiting for me. And admittedly, I am only interested in about 5% of
the mail I do get from xpert, but I need to look through almost every letter
to see if there's anything in it that I need.

There are mailing lists for most of these already set up... probably
newsgroups too ( again, I wouldn't know... I get it all in the mail ;^)
