[net.news] Is the net falling apart?

First there was Unknown@hplabs. Now I see an occasional Unknown@decwrl
or even just Unknown. And articles appear two or three or four or even
*five* times duplicated. And the latest is ridiculous. Two to two dozen
week old articles show up all of a sudden in a newsgroup. Yikes!

The only problems I've seen have come from HP. What really pisses me off
is that the "From: " line keeps changing. I have to keep editing my
global KILL file in order to keep up with it.

The repeat articles and Unknown@decwrl are all coming from HP; check the
Path headers; some of them are really strange. The repeats of old articles
all come from hpitg; their paths indicate that hpitg is directly connected
to hundreds of machines. Greg Fowler @ hplabs tells me they've disconnected
hpitg until they can figure out what the problem is.

Apparently hplabs and other hp sites have been experimenting with some
new "notes" software. As far as I know, hplabs is the only backbone site
running notes. Notes is so different from news (especially for followups)
that I'm surprised it works as well as it does. If I were a net.god I'd
ban notes from the net.

Thank god I thought it was only me... nobody else around here seems
to have noticed it...
Felt like the end-of-BRAZIL dream sequence... What gives?
