Here is a summary of my recent request for information on how to obtain better performance from X11R4 running on diskless 4MB Sun 3/50s. I was hoping to have some comparisons of the efficacy of the various suggestions, but I haven't had time yet to do anything... The most common response, far and away was to turn them into X terminals. 'xkernel' is available from sol.ctr.columbia.edu for this purpose. For us, this is a politically impossible solution, however. I think this is also addressed in the FAQ file for comp.windows.x. Much was also made of compiling with gcc (instead of Sun's cc), which was had already done. Finally, in order to reduce memory requirements to the absolute minimum, you can create a version of the Sun server which supports only the bw2 monochrome frame buffer and be sure to stip the final executable. Figuring out how to make the monochrome-only server is pretty easy if you have a look in the Imakefile at some other machines for which this is done DEC PMAX, I think, and probably a couple of others.
