[comp.windows.x] Looking for bitmaps

harrism@iccgcc.decnet.ab.com (10/30/90)

Someone posted a request for Halloween bitmaps. Then he posted a message that
he had some, but I missed the message that had the bitmaps in it. Was it
posted?

I'm looking for interesting bitmaps to use for backgrounds on a monochrome
system. I already have access to the ones on decwrl, which are dated 1988.
I would be particulary interested any good Nagels (I already have kristen and
peidmont). Ftp is ok.

I hope everyone knows that making and distributing electronic reproductions
of copyright protected works of art is illegal. If you really like the pics,
why not go and buy them?

There is a "fair use" clause in copyright laws. It is NOT strictly
illegal to make reproductions, but one must be careful how one
distributes them.

Only if you agree with the law.

And to think... I almost bought a Sony yesterday.

Don't confuse the problems of software copyright law with that
established for photographs, art and writing. I don't believe
there any people who produce the above that don't believe in the
usefullness of copyright law. Copyright law really was developed to
protect the individual artist from being ripped off.

But now it helps the artist (or company producing that artist) to
rip off the individual...

A Sony what?

Sony makes well over 1000 items from home entertainment products to
computers to professional audio and video products. Why would the
opinion of one employee in one division making a single product make
you decide not to buy a Sony product?

I may not agree with your opinion on something, but that's not going
to affect my attitude about Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton,
Florida, or anything like that.

Which is why the copyright law has the "fair use" exclusion --
allowing you to make video/audio tapes, quote or make a copy of an
article, etc. One can, probably, even take a scanned image and keep
it for personal use. It's when you start making many copies and
distributing them that you're no longer being fair to the copyright holder.

I don't mind paying the artist (and production company) for his work
and the copyright law insures that happens. The alternative seems far
more abusive.
