The Software Engineering Institute announces the Serpent User Interface Management System, Beta Release 1.0. Serpent is available via anonymous ftp from ftp.sei.cmu.edu (128.237.1.13) and can be found in /pub/serpent. Serpent is also available on export.lcs.mit.edu (18.30.0.238) in /contrib/serpent. Other ftp sites where Serpent can normally be found should be up to date in approximately one week. There are several files available: a README, necessary only if you build Serpent from source; the source distribution (serpent.src.tar.Z); and the documentation (serpent.docs.tar.Z). In addition, there are several files which hold binaries for various machines, called serpent.xxx.tar.Z, where xxx can be vax (for VAXStation), sun3, sun4 (SPARC), and mips (for DECStation). It should be noted that the binaries only include Athena demonstration programs; if you want to use Serpent under Motif, you must get the source distribution and build it. Serpent Beta Release 1.0 represents a significant change over Alpha Release 0.9, in terms of enhanced capabilities, the addition of the entire Motif Widget set, significant performance improvements, a universal input/output technology integrator, and the Serpent Editor. There are also some new Athena and Motif demonstrations.
