A few weeks ago I said that I'd start a list of freely available X sources. I've just placed the first copy of this list on export.lcs.mit.edu [18.30.0.238] under: /contrib/x-source-list.Z Currently there is only 41 entries in this list. There are lots more to catalogue, so the list will grow over the next few months. Its surprising just how much software there is available! The list mainly contains sources which can be ftp'ed direct from a machine. For those people without ftp access you might be able to pull files back using the Princeton BITNET FTP Server (I have heard that some mailers may refuse mail from known ftp->mail servers though). Send mail to "bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu" for more help, with a single line message of "HELP". The format of the list is constrained to make it easier to search. Where possible different ftp sites have been given. The first ftp site is normally the main location of the software and one at which the latest version should be available. Other sites are normally given if they serve different continents and so may be easier to get to. For a list of available ftp sites that contain X sources see Question 51 in the X Frequently Asked Questions List posted monthly to comp.windows.x/xpert and is also archived on export under /contrib/XFAQ.Z A typical entry in the list looks like this .. Name: xdvi Description: previewer for TeX .dvi output files Keywords: TeX dvi text processing previewer Version: patchlevel 11 Release-Date: 13 Feb 91 Contact: vojta@math.berkeley.edu Requirements: None that I am aware of Additional: Also runs under X10; can use same fonts as your printer FTP: export.lcs.mit.edu:contrib/xdvi.shar.Z [30.18.0.128] Any of the fields (except the Name:) can be duplicated. Fields can also be split across multiple lines as long as they are indented by two tab stops or other whitespace. The FTP: field uses the same format as that used by the comp.archives newgroup, i.e. ftp.site:pathname/file [internet.address] If you would like to add details of other software to this list, please fill in the form below and email it to me at rlh2@ukc.ac.uk Corrections are especially welcomed!
