[comp.windows.x] IBM-PC clone X server with VMS DECwindows

dittman@skitzo.csc.ti.com (Eric Dittman) (06/08/91)

I've read the FAQs on X servers for IBM-PC clones, and the list is sort
of small for servers under MS-DOS. I called Quarterdeck first, and they
said DESQview/X won't be ready until August. I called Hummingbird, and
they have a hefty return fee if I don't like the implementation. Spectra-
Graphics/GSS sounded good until I told them I wanted to talk to our VMS
systems running DECwindows. They told me they don't support PC-Xview
talking to DECwindows under VMS. I decided at this point to just ask
what other people are using on their IBM-PC clones with VMS DECwindows.
Please e-mail your experiences, and if there is interest I'll summarize
to the group. I'm interested in an X server for an IBM-PC clone talking
to VMS DECwindows at the moment. If the X server will talk to other
kinds of systems, that's okay, but it HAS to be able to work with VMS
DECwindows.

Thanks

If you have TCP/IP (such as Ultrix Connection - UCX, etc.) products installed
on the VAX/VMS, you should have no problem in using any X server running on PC
with TCP/IP support, eg. Graphics/GSS, PC-Xview, PC-Xsight, etc. You should
use the following commands to redirect output to your X-server:

set display/creat/node=<nodename>/transport=tcpip

If you want DECnet transport, then your only choice may be DEC's PCSA,
PC DECwindows is a X11R3 implementation and it supports DECnet. Quality is
quite good, and it is a perfect match to VMS (in my opinion).
