We have been using one PC X server, with a bundled ftp & tcp/ip package, and we haven't been very pleased. 1) when using telnet, you can't use the arrow keys in vi. The escape sequences don't arrive correctly to the host. 2) terminal emulation is poor in the bundled telnet, marginally usable as a dumb terminal. 3) The users find the X server tough to deal with, tough to start up, confusing, and at times problematic. 4) Memory management is poor. Even with four MB of memory on the PC, you can't have more than two windows. 5) Mwm processes and windows on the UNIX end are left running even after the user logs off and powers down the PC. This sounds like a UNIX bug, but the PC does no checking to see that the processes connected to the server have actually died. 6) There is no way to stop anybody on the network from acidentally or deliberately sending the PC user another client to their server. This is enough of a gripes list. What are your recommendations for PC X servers? Are the bugs universal? What products don't have these bugs? Please reply by e-mail, as I don't normally read this group. Vender are MOST welcome.
