[comp.os.minix] Keeper of the source ?

george@osu-eddie.UUCP (03/03/87)

I have two questions relating to sources posted to the net. One is to
people in netland, the other is to Dr. Tanenbaum (of genneral interest too).

To those who dwell in netland:
Has anyone yet volunteered to be "Keeper of the Source" for bugfixes,
new MINIX utilities, etc. that are posted to the net ?

To Dr. Tanenbaum:
Will there be any coordinated effort to validate bugfixes posted
to the net and to incorporate them (and new utilities) into future
PHSD (Prentice-Hall Standard Distribution) releases ?

Liz Sommers, administrator of UUCP site "UNIROT" has volunteered space
on her system to do this. UNIROT is Public Access UNIX in New Jersey.
Anyone can log in their, learn about UNIX, write some programs (and get
them installed), read news, etc. Liz also keeps the mod.sources archives
available there. UNIROT is run out of the graciousness of Heurikon
(who donated the computer) and UniPress Software which pays for the
phone lines and has loaned countless equipment to the project such as
modems and a spare disk drive.

UNIROT will be down soon, Heurikon has decided to upgrade it to their
latest VME bus 68020 system. At the same time, the O/S will upgrade
to Sys VR2. How long it will be down depends on how hard the transition
is. Liz spends a majority of her time maintaining UNIROT, occasionally
helped out by myself, Mike Gallaher, and Bob Halloran. None of us gets
anything financially out of UNIROT.

Liz's personal PC-AT is also where I dabble in MINIX and is located
across the room.
