[] I heard these questions had been asked before, but please bare with me as I do not have access to USENET, and a kind sole posted this for me here. So please respond directly to me. This is my problem : I have a PClone with 640K, WD-controller, MicroScience 20MB HD, single floppy. I am having trouble installing minix on my harddisk. When I try mkfs /dev/hd2 <some number> minix returns lots of error messages of the following form Winchester task got message from -1unrecoverable disk error on device 3/2, block Error: put_block couldn't write Ling 1 being processed when error detected Hard disk won't reset. Hard disk won't reset. Hard disk won't reset. . . . I have no problems running DOS applications on my harddisk, so is there something special that MINIX does to the harddisk? Other questions: 1) I also have an Adaptec RLL with a Miniscribe HD (giving 31MB). I tried this combination and got similar results as above. 2) Can I put the root file system on the harddisk and thus freeing up more RAM? I would imagine that RAM disk speed is not really necessary for the faster machines (8MHz AT-type). Even for slower machines (like mine), it could still be tolerated (i think). Thanks for any help. Again, please send replies directly to me, as I do not have access to USENET.
