Well, my apologies to Andy... he did it right and I didn't know what I was doing!! The su, mkdir, rmdir, (and mount/umount) problems were due to the fact that Minix just like Unix resets the set-uid bit on copied files! Even though I had the owner set to root they still need a chmod 4755 after cping!... Thanks to Joe Burger at U of Wisconsin Madison for the help... I don't know if he qualifies as a "wizard" but he is certainly an adept... neither our system mgr. nor our guru in the math dept. could figure out this simple problem... and I read write by it in Rochkind's "Advanced Unix Programming"... so.. all you PC folks who are learning UNIX via Minix take heed... it's so UNIX like, it comes with the same idiosyncrocies...
